Unemployment Benefits: How to Apply in Texas

In this video you’re going to learn exactly how to apply for unemployment benefits in Texas.

Employment lawyer Nick Wagoner shares his computer screen with you in this video and walk you step-by-step through the application process so that you can get your unemployment benefits as quickly as possible.

Here are the steps for filing for unemployment benefits that I cover in the video:

Step 1: Apply for Unemployment Benefits

First, you’ll learn how to fill out an application for unemployment benefits through the Texas Workforce Commission’s (TWC) website. In this step of your application, you will provide the TWC with information about yourself, including your:

  • name and contact information,
  • social security number,
  • military service,
  • Texas Driver’s License or ID number,
  • income received while unemployed,
  • citizenship information or alien registration number (if not a U.S. citizen),
  • education,
  • labor union information,
  • pension information, and
  • retirement benefits information.

You will also be asked to provide the TWC with information about your last employer, including:

  • your first and last date of employment,
  • their name,
  • their address,
  • your earnings,
  • your work hours,
  • your pay rate,
  • your pay period,
  • the reason you are no longer working for them, and
  • the normal wage for your occupation.

Step 2: Request Unemployment Benefits Payment

Next, you’ll learn how to request a benefits payment through the TWC’s website. I’ll show you how to select a payment option, confirm your mailing address with the TWC, and report your work and other income during your payment request period.

We’ll also walk through the TWC’s questions about your ability and availability to work, work-search contacts, and certification. To learn more about whether you qualify for unemployment benefits in Texas, check out my video on that topic here.

Step 3: Register for WorkinTexas.com

Finally, I will show you how to register for WorkinTexas.com. In this step, I’ll show you how to create a resume on WorkinTexas.com. Additionally, we’ll answer various questions on this website that will help you find a job that’s right for you.

According to the TWC, you will typically receive your first unemployment benefits payment approximately 3 weeks after you complete these three steps. By the end of this video, you will know exactly what you will need to do to get your benefits payment as soon as possible.
